The Hartford introduces unique new coverage for small businesses

Most businesses have essential employees who are vital to the operation and financial well-being of the business. Losing an essential employee can be devastating to a small business, and preparing for this is a vital part of any business insurance program. Until now, this has typically been done with key person insurance (often referred to as key man insurance), which is a life insurance policy that a business takes out on an essential employee. With a new endorsement released by The Hartford on March 11th, coverage is now available for temporary absences as well.

Business Income Extension for Essential Personnel
Most business insurance policies cover loss of business income and extra expenses incurred due to a covered loss. This endorsement extends that coverage to include loss of business income and extra expenses incurred due to the unplanned absence of an essential employee. Unlike key person insurance, this coverage is triggered by anything other than termination, resignation, or retirement

The Hartford is currently the only insurance carrier that offers this type of coverage, and the optional endorsement covers up to a 90-day absence. For coverage to apply, the essential person must be absent for more than 30 days, and the employer must not have been aware of the absence for more than 30 days in advance.

If this product is successful, I expect other companies to begin offering something similar in the near future. This is a great first step, but I think that the 90-day limit is conservative. As The Hartford and other companies become more comfortable with this type of coverage, I would hope to see options for 6-12 month limits. Assured SRA guests hear about healthcare reform at March executive briefing

Approximately 100 Assured SRA clients and other friends gathered at the Kansas City Carriage Club on Friday, March 3 to hear from special guest speaker Joel Wood. Wood is senior vice president, government affairs for The Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers. The Council represents 80 of the top 100 insurance firms including Assured Partners and Wood heads its lobbying and government affairs segment.

Wood’s presentation was entitled “Trump, Congressional Chaos: The Consequences of the Benefits Agenda.” He detailed the changes coming in healthcare policy with the new Trump Administration. He described how employment-based coverage is still by far the dominant means of health insurance in the U.S. and the uncertainty about what might happen with proposals to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.

He explained that several options exist including buying across state borders, a higher tax on the one percent of wealthiest Americans, tax deductible premiums and others. He also described the contentious state of government discourse in Washington and how that issue was complicating the reform picture.

Assured SRA is proud to support Women in Construction Week

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) will celebrate Women in Construction (WIC) Week March 5-11, 2017. NAWIC’s mission is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry. WIC Week provides an occasion for NAWIC’s thousands of members across the country to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.

The focus of WIC Week is to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry and the Kansas City Chapter #100 is purchasing multiple billboards around the downtown area to showcase local companies that support Women In Construction Week. Assured SRA is proudly purchasing space on one of those billboards to recognize the important role that women play in the construction industry. The billboard will be displayed at I-670 eastbound over I-70.

“The National Association of Women in Construction is committed to enhancing the success of all women in construction – not just those who are NAWIC members,” said Sandy Field, the immediate past-president of NAWIC. “We accomplish this through educational opportunities, networking, and community/industry service projects”

“While there are more than one million women employed in the construction industry, women only comprise approximately ten percent of the construction workforce.  These women, whether they are administrative specialists, general contractors, subcontractors, trades people, or professionals, are vital elements to the construction process,” said Field. “’Women in Construction Week’ is simply a time set aside to thank those women for all their efforts toward successful construction projects.  WIC Week will also bring attention to the industry and encourage others to realize that construction is a viable, profitable career field.”

Going on vacation? Don’t come home to a watery loss!

When you’re a homeowner in the Midwest, water damage can wreak havoc on your home and possessions. Water damage can occur when you least expect it. There are three major aspects of the dreaded words “WATER CLAIM” and how it is or isn’t covered under your homeowner’s policy. This section will review frozen pipes.


The majority of homeowner’s policies have coverage for sudden and accidental losses that occur from frozen pipes. A frozen pipe while on vacation can cause extensive damage to homes.  This sort of sudden occurrence from an event is typically covered on a homeowner’s insurance policy. One aspect to review is that even though a sudden broken pipe is likely covered on a policy, insurance companies will exclude coverage for prolonged water loss – like a continual drip that causes damage over a period of time.


Many times frozen pipes can be prevented even in the most frigid regions. There are three smart was to prevent frozen pipes when the temperature drops below freezing:

Homeowners should keep the heat going inside the home even while traveling to keep the pipes warm.
Allow the faucet to slightly drip into the sink to allow the water to flow without bottling up to freeze.
Open cabinet base doors on all the faucets to allow the heat of the home to reach the pipes.

Review your Coverage

On your insurance policy you will want to review your coverage with your agent. There will be specific coverages related to water damage on the policy. Not all policies are created equal so reviewing this section on your company specific water coverage is important. Reviewing these coverages will help give you piece of mind.

2016 was a great year for Assured SRA!

As we look toward the end of the year and prepare for an exciting year ahead, I wanted to take a few minutes and recap some of the notable accomplishments of our Assured SRA team. This is one of my favorite communications to post because it gives me a chance to reflect and take pride on what a truly remarkable team we have.

This was our first full year under our rebranded Assured SRA name and I am very pleased with how we’ve been able to bring in all of the assets of AssuredPartners (the nation’s 13th largest broker) in the form of additional expertise, resources and superior carrier agreements to help our long-time and newer clients. As an AssuredPartners’ agency in the Central States region, it has meant new duties for many of us (myself included as the Regional President), but it has also been a net-positive for our agency clients locally. It is nice to be affiliated with a winning organization as AssuredPartners is approaching $900 million in revenue and will complete approximately 40 acquisitions 2016.  It’s amazing to think AssuredParters was a start-up that did its first acquisition in September of 2011. Here in the Central States region, the acquisition pipeline has never been more robust and in 2016 we expanded into Texas and now have offices in Dallas and Houston.

For those of us in Kansas City, a year of record growth was the theme as we saw organic growth at nine percent year-over-year. We also grew in size as our office added 11 new faces to bring our employee total to 70. Some of those employees came when we added the new AssuredPartners Transportation group headed by Dean Allen.
